Unusual Cover Versions – “Light My Fire”

Playing with YouTube this morning and got inspired to note some, what some may think, unusual covers of some great songs.  To qualify as an unusual cover, it must be a reasonably famous original redone by reasonably famous act.  My first attempt into the world of unusual covers is one done by soul great, Jackie Wilson.  Jackie has a resounding resume of hits, dating back to the 1950’s.  He died in 1984, leaving a legacy that included such hits as Lonely Teardrops and Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher.  He also left us this cover of The Doors classic, Light My Fire.  He recorded it in 1969.  Check it out.

And for comparison, here is the Doors performing the song live on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Random Songs From My Phone – KT Tunstall – “Under The Weather”

I loved this album.  “Eye To The Telescope” continues to be a regular on my rotation after, what 9 years.  This is one of the great tunes on the disc, “Under The Weather”.  The album, released in 2004, and was her first studio album.  The album gained her multiple Grammy and Brit nominations, winning the 2005 Brit for best female solo artist.  KT Tunstall is Scottish born and plays a mean guitar as well as being a fine singer and songwriter.  Her genre is hard to pin down as she moves effortlessly between rock, pop and folk.  the cut I have selected is a live version, done on Jools Holland in April 2005.  Enjoy, I have many times.

Song Of The Day – Delbert and The Commotions

Song Of The Day today is actually Group of the Day.  I received an email from Brian Asselin, a member of an R&B/Funk group known as Delbert & The Commotions.  The best part, the group includes Delbert Nelson, once with the legendary Funk Brothers.  Brian met Delbert while touring with the Funk Brothers and ended up collaborating on an album about a year ago.  An interesting story, a Canadian sax player and an American singer teaming up to write a soul album.  Please enjoy, visit the links and maybe pop a song or two onto your iPod.

Today’s tune is by American folk/rock artist, Lissie.  The song, “When I’m Alone” from her 2010 album, “Catching A Tiger”.  The song is more rock than folk and showcases a strong voice and a pretty good band.  The song was getting some major airplay in Canada on CBC2, likely in support of her upcoming album, “Back To Forever”.  It is due to be released in September.  An interesting note, the album reached number 4 in Norway, the featured song, number 2.

Random Songs From My Phone – Eliza Doolittle – “So High”

Quirky English singer Eliza Doolittle moved her way into my music world with the release of her self titled first album  The song that originally caught my interest was “Pack Up” and I believe it made my year’s top 10 in 2011.  Eliza (real name Eliza Caird) released the record in 2010 and is working on her follow-up.  This song is a great ballad that showcases her voice and her talent as an up and coming song writer.  Enjoy your Friday.

Song Of The Day – US3 – “Cantaloop”

Kind of a smooth rap/jazz song by UK-based band US3.  The title “Cantaloop“.  The band has been around since 1992 and released their first album “Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)” in 1993.  This is a remastered and re-released version from that album.  The record, released in 2013 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the original album, is a classic.  I don’t normally get into the rap/hip-hop material, so this is a bit of a departure for me.  The song is very interesting in its fusing of jazz, funk and rap.  Surprising that it is from 20 years ago.  Enjoy.

Song Of The Day – Jimmie Vaughn – “Dirty Girl”

So tell me, what do you do when you are driving 1100 km, over 2 days, in the rain and in the car for 14 hours.  If you’re me, you hit the radio and look for songs to Shazam for your blog.  I think I found some.  The first road tune I heard was a classic blues tune by former Fabulous Thunderbird, Jimmie Vaughn.  The song. “Dirty Girl”.  One of the Texas roadhouse blues guitar players that were spawned in the 70’s, Jimmy is a great player, very great.  Seems to run in the Vaughn family.

Song Of The Day – Imaginary Cities – Hummingbird

Imaginary Cities

A quick song for you from a band out my home town, Winnipeg.  The song. Hummingbird, the group, Imaginary Cities.  The video, kind of cool.  Speaking of the peg, will be out there again this weekend so some slow blogging once again.  And an apology to people I normally drop in on, just to bloody busy, but I will catch up with you.  In the meantime enjoy another fine song courtesy of my morning drive and CBC2.

Lets go with a bit of an oldie (2011), Grouplove and their hit, Tongue Tied.  Great song, very interesting video.  The song comes from their only album to date “Never Trust A Happy Song”.  They are an indie group, based in NYC.  The NYC sound is becoming very familiar to my tastes of late.

Another of my many finds on CBC2 here in Canada.  Alejandro Escovedo released his latest album “Big Station” in 2012.  This song, also titled “Big Station” is off this record. Alejandro is no stranger to the world of music as he has recorded 14 albums dating back to 1992.  Born in Texas and the child of Mexican immigrants, he cut his recording teeth with several punk bands way back in the 80’s.  Great singer-songwriter, well worth the effort to check out his material.
