One of the world’s finest guitar players, Hubert Sumlin, passed away on December 4 at the age of 80. He was best known for his time as Howlin’ Wolf’s guitar player. He was respected enough to placed at number 43 on the Rolling Stone list of the “100 Greatest Guitar Players Of All Time”.

He began playing guitar at the age of 6. He started playing with Howling Wolf in 1954. He played on “Howlin’ Wolf” which was named as the number 3 guitar album of all time by Mojo magazine. In his career, he was nominated for 4 Grammys, never winning. A great player, who will of course, live on through his many recordings. Please enjoy these videos of a superb musician. Turn it up and LOVE THE BLUES.

A consistently underrated guitarist in my opinion. Great video with Slim at piano. So awesome.
Thanks for stopping by Matthew. Enjoyed your post today. The Wildeflowers. Wild, hadn’t heard that name in many many years
Another guitarist I never heard of. Another guitarist I’m sorry I’ll never get to see.
Thanks for the turn on. Good stuff, I’ll be digging through his catalog.
He was something. The accolades are pouring out. Always loved Howlin’ Wolf and now I know one of the reasons why
Nearly got to see him in New York at the end of October last year but he ran out of health and was unable to turn up.
That would have been incredible. What a player.
The consolation was memorable, though. Joe Louis Walker stood in with the Nighthawks and they gave a great performance in front of about forty people.
you, them and 39 other people. What a night that would be.
I’ll probably put up some New York images after I finish Japan, which would then include that night. Probably in about two or three months.
I’ll watch for it.
