Welcome back to the list of Canada’s best music. This entry includes some current stars, a classic rocker and a pair of icons, one of whom you may not have realized was Canadian based on music history and cultural impact. Let’s start with the video.
1. Sam Roberts
“Canadian Dream”
This is the first entry in the list for Sam Roberts. The band is a current favourite and has an extensive following.
“Running Back to Saskatoon”
Another Canadian icon makes its first entry to the series. This song has always been one of my favourites for several non-musical reasons. First I am originally from Winnipeg, where they hail from, and second Saskatoon is my second home, lived there for 15 years.
3. David Wilcox
“Riverboat Fantasy”
David Wilcox, love this guy. The prototypical live guitar player. Writes some very interesting lyrics and simply loves to play live. We saw him play at Olympic Plaza in downtown Calgary on Canada Day and it was just nuts. Lots of fun when this guy cuts loose.
4. Neil Young
“This Note’s for You”
Bet you didn’t know Neil Young was a Canuck did ya. The first time on the list, this tune rocks.
“Julia”
A second entry in the first twenty songs posted.

– Loved Riverboat Fantasy, but your man looks like a zombie on the attack when he gets into his lead.
– Seriously, does anyone not know Neil is Canadian? (was going to say something about flannel here but I’ll leave it alone). I remember when that song came out. It’s still great, and sadly, I remember everything he’s spoofing.
– Loved the Our Lady Peace track.
Thanks for another great set!
Neil Young with his first band, The Squires in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Wow. very 60s. But good stuff. No way I would connect the Neil Young I know to this,
Finding a bunch of stuff on this facebook page that I didn’t know or remember. A rich history in Winnipeg, and this era was my teens and 20’s. Check it out. Manitoba Music Museum.
I’m actually going to see Burton Cummings at a local venue in Long Island, NY. He is playing with Don McLean. Should be an entertaining show.
You will like. I saw Don McLean here in Calgary a few years ago, outdoor venue at our Folkfest. He was really good. He closed the show, and the crowd loved him. He followed Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, so the crowd was pretty energized when he hit the stage and he actually kept up the momentum. Quite the pro.
Saw and loved Sharon Jones. Do you guys know more than the one Don McLean song off the top of your heads?
Or as my friend IrishPaul would put it, “Is he going to play all the hit?
Vincent and American Pie come to mind, other than that, a total blank. (And I’ve seen him live)
Haha. It’s true. “Vincent” and “American Pie” are the only two that really come to mind. Perhaps his version of “Crying” which is pretty solid. I’m looking forward to it.
