Today’s 5 spot includes a classic female singer of the 60’s, another entry from Blue Rodeo some classic rock and folk, and a current superstar.

Buffy Ste. Marie is a native Canadian artist, born in Saskatchewan.  Her music is a mix of history and mysticism.  She is a true Canadian treasure.

This is one of her anti-war anthems.

Love these guys.  Another entry from a great band.  This song is off Casino, recorded in 1990.

3. Crash Vegas

” It’s Not Funny Anymore”

Crash Vegas was a Canadian folk-rock band from the late 1980’s.  It has a connection to Blue Rodeo in that Greg Keelor, the other singer and songwriter for Blue Rodeo was one of the founding members.   He left the band before they had recorded anything. This song is from their 1989 record, “Red Earth”.  The quality of the clip is lacking and I apologize.  Could not find  anything better.

4. 54-40

“One Day in Your Life”

Another entry from a Canadian classic band.

5. Nelly Furtado

“I’m Like a Bird”

I didn’t actually listen to these songs tonight. I’ll try tomorrow. I just wanted to let you know I came, I saw, I conquered…or something like that. Night John.

Good night. Thanks for pooping in after a tough day like you had

      1. The Hobbler Avatar

It was kind of funny, but scary too. It made me feel helpless. I hate that feeling.

        1. John Phillips Avatar

I could not even begin to understand that feeling. It must really suck.

      Thanks, glad you liked it

Dad talks fondly of Buffy Saint Marie and yet I never took the time out to hear anything by her until now because of you (don’t you say “Who’s your daddy?”). Somehow I never thought she would sing high tempo songs.
About time you put Nelly on the list! So what if autotune can’t help her, she’s still a Maneater.

Buffy us a 60’s icon. Seems like she played with or wrote a song for anyone who was someone

  4. El Guapo Avatar

    Great set of entries.
The more I hear of Blue Rodeo, the more I like. I dug the 54-40 tune too.

Very consistent band over the years and one of a few that didn’t even try to make it outside of Canada. Seems like they figured that if it happened it happened.

  5. Lily Avatar

Haha I remember when that Nelly Furtado song came out. Wasn’t her album called Whoa Nelly or something totally dumb like that?

    1. John Phillips Avatar

You nailed it. Whoa nelly it was.

  6. Archon's Den Avatar

It was nice to hear Buffy again. I haven’t dug too deep, have you done anything with Valdy? I continue to be of two minds about Nelly. She’s a good writer, singer and performer….but that bird song? I don’t know where my home is? I had the same pair of robins come back from Florida and nest on my porch for five straight years. I still recall, with distaste, the interview she gave on Much Music, when she was breaking out. It felt racist. Everything was about her being Portugese, although she’s not. She was born in Canada. She could write well because she was Portugese. She was a good singer because she was Portugese. I don’t know what she was saying about people like Leonard Cohen, or Gordy Lightfoot. And then she bragged about her morals because she was Portugese. The only females with worse morals than Portugese, might be Romanian. All this, and her parents might be from the Canary Islands, Portugal’s answer to Newfoundland. That’s my rant.

    1. John Phillips Avatar

And a nice rant it was. Haven’t hit valdy yet. Still about 400 songs to go. A long term project so to speak

    2. Archon's Den Avatar

Did I say Canary islands??? I meant The Azores, of course. At least I was in the right ocean, if not in my right mind.

So happy to see Buffy St. Marie in your post. Top of the bunch in this group, for me. I have loved her since I was a young girl (and that’s a while ago). Currently, her ‘No No Keshagesh’ is something I am playing a lot. It’s so tragically topical.

    1. John Phillips Avatar

Buffy is part of my initial exposure to music (I am that old haha). All the people she played with and wrote for are part of my life soundtrack. I love the old stuff to.
