The Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is a beautiful example of what well thought out lighting can do.

Do the columns have a bit of pink in them, or is that an effect of the lighting?

Don’t quite remember. I am thinking the lighting. The stained glass were huge windows and the colours danced everywhere. Quite spectacular on a sunny day. Always a different look. When they do all the windows it will be crazy. A lot of the windows are still clear glass. The place has been under construction since the 1920’s and will likely not be finished in our lifetimes.
Yeah, in the old days (dark ages/renaissance) those temples took way more than one lifetime.
We have been in just one that was built in a reasonable time frame, Salisbury Cathedral was built in 30 odd years. From what I have read, they built it before there was a town and is the only example of a cathedral built in just one architectural style. One of the original Magna Cartas is on display there.
If I had to guess, the pink is an element in the marble itself. It is a common color in much of the granite from that area, but the predominant color is not the pink. You would only catch it at certain times of day when the light strike it from the right angle. That is why as they get further away, they appear less pink.
