Gabrielle Papillon is a Canadian singer-songwriter (in a folk vein) with exceptional skills, and yet another talent from Canada’s East Coast. She is from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. She has sung and played since childhood and released her first album in 2001, “Songs For a Rainy Day”. Good tune, and of course, a live version. Very nice voice.
I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with Shawn Colvin’s music. This one is a love. When she hits the Pop side, not so much. This one is a bit more…indie sounding and hits the mark. The video, kind of cheesy, so listen while doing something else, unless you like la fromage. Enjoy. I’ll do the trivia thing tomorrow. Working on some posts about Alberta summers over the weekend. Must put the travel back into a travel blog.

We get into the way back machine with Peabody for this tune. Heard this on CKUA (great station in Alberta). Never heard of him or the song before. Great groove though. Unfortunately, John passed away in 2009. Great legacy, and he played with Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Phil Collins and many more. As an aside, to lazy to do the trivia thing tonight.
No posts on the weekend, company coming and it is Canada Day long weekend. We celebrate the creation of the greatest country on Earth on July 1.
Amos Lee is another of my favorites. My only issue with him is that I have found his albums to be inconsistent. In other words, he doesn’t hit my mark all the time, but when he does, it is very good. He is out of Philadelphia and has recorded 4 albums. I highly recommend the first (self titled) and the most recent. All have some excellent tracks. This cut is off his new album “Mission Bell” and is a live version of “Jesus”.

Crash Vegas was a Canadian folk-rock band from the late 1980’s. It has a connection to Blue Rodeo in that Greg Keelor, the other singer and songwriter for Blue Rodeo was one of the founding members.  He left the band before they had recorded anything. This song is from their 1989 record, “Red Earth”. The quality of the clip is lacking and I apologize. Could not find anything better.
It is Sunday and time for the next 5 in my list of Canada’s best music. In this edition, 2 by a current Canadian favourite, a classic rock song, a second entry by the great Joni Mitchell and some garage rock by Ugly Duckling.
Blue Rodeo are Canada’s number one alt-country, rock band. They have been churning out the hits for many years and are still at the top of Canada’s popular music game. This song was released in 1989.
Waaaay back in the 60’s, The Ugly Ducklings were the best there was on the Toronto music scene. Garage rockers extraordinaire. The version here is from a 2000 concert. Love it live.

A second tune on the list by the incomparable Joni Mitchell. Easily one of the greatest ever. This video features a live version and features an incredible band. Really, really good!!
