Canada’s Team – Bruins or Canucks

I see a lot of impassioned discussion on the issue of, as Canadians, who we should be backing in the Stanley Cup Finals, the Boston Bruins or the Vancouver Canucks. Let’s examine this issue in depth and without emotion, using only the facts and rate on a logic based analysis.

First the obvious.  Vancouver is in Canada, Boston is not.  This would normally be a powerful argument, EXCEPT for 2 minor, yet nagging issues.  Both Phoenix and Colorado were Canadian teams at one point, yet I didn’t hear anyone say that Colorado was Canada’s team.  What if Vancouver were to be moved to Houston this week, would they still be Canada’s team?  The second point is that Boston was once British and could easily have been part of Canada.  I will give a very slight advantage to Vancouver.

Winnipeg Jets – Update

It is beginning to look like this is a done deal.  Check out this link from The Hockey News.  Pretty slick in getting Winnipeg to bail out Phoenix once again to the tune of 40 million this time.  Sweet way to cover the Coyotes losses with the first ever relocation fee.  I think Bettman definitely does not like Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Jets Won’t Be Called The Jets??????

I just read an article where the mayor of Winnipeg, Sam Katz, says the Jets won’t be called the Jets.  I am thinking this will be very embarrassing when everyone in Winnipeg still calls them the Jets, wear Jets paraphernalia and chant “Go Jets Go” at the games.  They were the the Jets, they are still the Jets and have to be named the Jets again.  Anything else is an official abomination.

As a Duffer, I Love Watching The Pros Screw Up

If 110 was par, I’d be a scratch golfer.  It isn’t so I love it when the Pros screw up completely.

The Winnipeg Jets – Is This Going To Happen

We miss the Jets.  We rue the day they left, and that day is indelibly etched in my mind.  When the Jets started as a WHA team, with the million dollar signing of Bobby Hull, we were skeptical of the league.  Was this going to be a fly by night thing?  Turns out we were wrong.  The Jets thrived and became part of our community and psyche.  Anders, Ulfie, Joe Daley, Velli-Pekka Ketola, we ruled the WHA.  Hell, we even beat the Russian Red Army team, head to head.  Then came the NHL.  The league we ruled disappeared and we were absorbed by the NHL.  The terms were stiff.  We lost everybody and went from the best to the worst.  But we loved our Jets, still do.  Eight of us bought 4 season tickets and we went to the old barn to see the Bruins, the Rangers, the Leafs, we were in awe.  Then came the day when our hearts were ripped out.  They were gone, gone to that hockey hotbed, Phoenix.  My God, Phoenix.  Not fair.  We did everything we could to save them.  I think we raised 50 million dollars, but it wasn’t enough.  They were gone.  We couldn’t compete with a 65 cent dollar and the old barn, the Winnipeg Arena.

Times change though.  We have a new rink, a dollar worth a dollar and a galvanized public.  All that remains is to make sure the new owners don’t do something dumb and name them something else than the Jets.  I found this video of the last farewell.  Remember the past and look forward to their future.  Go Jets Go!!

A Special Request From Bill P

I got an email from my friend Bill for a video of Bobby Orr killing off an entire penalty on his own, just ragging the puck.  Sorry Bill, this is the best I could do. Continue reading “A Special Request From Bill P”

Ball Fans (And I) Will Miss Harmon Killebrew

I can still see in my mind’s eye, the 1965 World Series.  The LA Dodgers vs Minnesota Twins.  The Twins surprised all with their capture of the AL pennant that year and went on to face the Dodgers of Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and the rest of that powerhouse.  Behind the pitching of Jim Kaat, Mudcat Grant and the powerful bat of Harmon Killebrew, the Twins took the Dodgers to a 7th game, only to be shutout by the great Koufax.  They were held to 3 hits and lost 2-0.  I remember being heartbroken.  The underdog had almost pulled off the unthinkable.  Those summers when I was 9, 10 11, were dominated by ball, and Killebrew, along with Mickey Mantle, were my favourite players.  One of the sad parts of growing older is seeing your childhood heroes, who are now 20 years older than I pass on. I have attached a rare piece of footage showing Harmon Killebrew going head to head with Willie Mays on Gillette Home Run Derby and a link to Wiki describing the 1965 World Series.

Great Moments in Boston Bruins History – Part 7

I’m thinking they should play this one in the Bruins dressing room.  We rolled over and gave up.  Let’s get fired up boys.  We are talking Tampa Bay, a hotbed of hockey.  Let’s get pumped and destroy the Bolts.
