Where is the Stanley Cup

The Stanley Cup.

The tradition when a team wins the Stanley  Cup is for each player to have the cup for a few days.  The cup is now starting it’s journey with stops in the Massachusetts area.  The team has asked for requests to be with the cup and so far it has been to a softball tournament and a victory party at the Summer Shack restaurant in Cambridge.  I will try and follow it on it’s travels.  Just think what might have been Vancouver, if only your GM understood how to build a playoff team rather than a President’s Trophy team.

Winnipeg Jets – Chills At The Draft

Watching it live, the announcement that Winnipeg’s team will be, once again, the Winnipeg Jets sent chills down my spine.  Thanks to YouTube we can watch it over and over.  As for the player drafted, Mark Scheifele, he is no Jimmy Mann, the very first Jet draft pick.

Louise, a friend of mine on Facebook, knowing how much I supported the Canucks (not at all is the current support count), sent me the attached link about Roberto Luongo.

Thanks Louise, and I hope most of my friends enjoy this.

Winnipeg Jets – June 24 – A Very Big Day

On this day, the Winnipeg Jets franchise have named a coach, Claude Noel, now ex-coach of the ex-Manitoba Moose, picked a name, the Jets of course and participated in their first amateur draft by taking Mark Scheifele with the 7th pick overall. A bit of a surprise here. An improving player, he will work out. GO JETS GO.

Winnipeg Jets Schedule and Other News – June 23

The NHL released it’s 2011-12 schedule today and the Jets first game back in the NHL will be at home against the Montreal Canadiens.  Other highlights are Phoenix, in Phoenix, on October 15 and a New Years eve game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.  The big highllight will be the Boston Bruins, in Winnipeg on December 6 and February 17.  Maybe my favourite niece Krysta can take me to one of those games???

In other NHL news, Philadelphia Flyers made some blockbuster moves today just prior to the draft.  In 3 separate moves, they signed Ilya Bryzgalov, traded Jeff Carter to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Jakub Voracek, and moved Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings for Brayden Schenn (Saskatoon Blades product, via Brandon Wheat Kings), Wayne Simmonds and a 2nd round draft pick.  They gave Matt Clackson and future considerations to the Coyotes for the rights to Bryzgalov.  The trades were necessary to clear out cap space to sign the ex-Coyote netminder.

This series of moves completely transforms the Flyers.  There also a few goalies that will be on the market as a result of this as well.  The Flyers definitely had some inconsistency between the pipes last year.

Tim Thomas Beats Luongo Again – This is Getting Old

Congratulations to the Boston Bruins goalie, Tim Thomas on completing his season with the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s best goaltender.  To win, he beat out Roberto Luongo of the Canucks and Pekke Rinne of the Nashville Predators in the balloting of the NHL’s general managers.  He was named on 26 of the 30 ballots, giving rise to the question, who did not think that he was not one of the NHL’s top 3 goaltenders.  Besides Vancouver GM, Mike Gillis that is, who likely put Luongo  as 1, 2 and 3.

This was only the second time in history that a goalie has won the Stanley Cup, the Conn Smythe Trophy and the Vezina in the same year, the first being Bernie Parent with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 AND 1975.  Tim now has a goal for next year.

In other NHL award news, Corey Perry won the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player, beating out a Sedin (not sure, or care, which one) and Ryan Kesler won a well deserved Frank Selke trophy as the league’s best defensive forward.

Brian Burke Disses Winnipeg and Their Hockey Future

You have to admire Brian Burke‘s hockey acumen.  His work with the Vancouver Canucks and Anaheim Ducks was outstanding (the Toronto Maple Leafs, not so much, but then who cares).  His biggest issue is his mouth.  He continually shoots from the lip with no regard to how people perceive him.  Still thinks he’s with the Canucks, I guess.  At any rate, he dissed Winnipeg‘s ability to keep their hard fought new team.

Vancouver Canucks – What Went Wrong – Part 4 – General

Photo of hockey executive Mike Gillis.
Mike Gillis - Image via Wikipedia

The content below is purely my opinion, which, regardless, I have the right to express, just as Canuck fans have the right to disagree.  I will not argue these points to any extent as I feel they are true for me, and possibly others.

My friends that are Canuck fans will be happy to know that this will be my last post.  I put up a post earlier about not liking the Canucks no matter how hard I tried.  I kind of felt that us Bruin fans were lonely out here, but as it went on, I came to realize that more and more people were deserting the team as the Canuck’s true colours came through.  Their fans and management and the team itself fully expected that Canada would march in  lock step and cheer them on.  As these fans watched they came to realize that maybe, just maybe, the Bruins were the team that represented their values.  The lunch bucket team, the hard-working team, the perceived (by Canuck fans) underdog team.  Their style of play was far more “Canadian” like than was the Canucks game.  Then it became a circle the wagons mentality.  You know, the “Woe is me, the whole world is against me”.scenario.  This was, and is, best personified by the Canuck GM,  Mike Gillis.  He is another major reason the team was not ready for a standard NHL playoff.  He built the team, and he is ultimately responsible.  The classic whining, “we play a skill game that the refs took away from us”.  Guess what Mike, this is the way it was, the way it is and probably the way it always will be.  Get over it and put some character on your team, or perhaps the next guy will.

Having said this, and fully expecting to get blasted for my personal opinion, I have listed a series of links that have some commentary on the series that, yet again, Canuck fans will not like.
